Grenade:10 worshipers cheat death in Jos

What would have become another tragedy in Jos, Plateau State capital, was averted by men of the Special Task Force (STF) yesterday, as a grenade fired into a mosque located at Bukuru Expressway in Jos South Local Government Area, failed to explode. The attack occurred when some Muslims were preparing for the morning prayer. The grenade would have killed no fewer than 10 worshippers, destroyed the mosque and possibly injure many passersby.
It was gathered that when the mission of the gunmen failed, they fired shots in the air apparently to clear the way for escape. Media and Information Officer of the STF, Captain Salisu Mustapha, who confirmed the incident in a statement, said it took the swift intervention of the STF personnel, who cordoned off the area, to avert breakdown of law and order. “There was an attempted explosion at a mosque located along Bukuru Expressway in Jos South Local Government Area by miscreants when a 36-hand grenade was thrown into a mosque, but it failed to detonate.
Thereafter they fired shots in the air and escaped. No arrest was made,”,he stated. Captain Musptapha enjoined people to be vigilant and report suspicious objects, persons or activities in their area to security agencies. He assured that investigation was ongoing to apprehend perpetrators of the dastardly act. Similarly, the STF announced that in a separate operation jointly carried out with the state security outfit, ‘Operation Rainbow’, in February, two unidentified bodies were discovered during a raid on a suspected hideout of criminals in Shendam and Bakin Ladi Local Government Areas of the state.
